How much does a paternity test cost?
A non-legal (Peace of Mind) paternity test costs GHS 2,000. A legal paternity test costs GHS 2,500. These standard prices cover 2 people. See the full price list on this page for other family tests.
What is the difference between non-legal and legal testing?
Both tests use the same science. A non-legal (Peace of Mind) test is for your own knowledge. A legal test includes identity checks and a documented chain of custody, so the report can be used for court and official matters.
Can you collect the sample at my home or office?
Yes, for non-legal (Peace of Mind) tests. You can come to Axis, or we can take the cheek swab at your home or office. Home and office collection costs extra to cover travel, and we'll confirm the charge when you book. Legal tests are collected at Axis.
Can I use a non-legal result in court?
No. Ghanaian courts accept legal DNA reports only. If there's any chance you'll need the result for court, choose a legal test from the start.
How accurate is a DNA test?
The test either excludes the person as a biological relative or gives strong statistical support for the relationship. The result depends on correct samples from the right people, which is why we follow careful identity and labelling steps.
Who analyses the samples?
Samples are analysed by AlphaBiolabs, a UK laboratory accredited to ISO 17025 by UKAS. Axis arranges your appointment, collection and report.
Does it hurt?
No. We gently rub a soft swab inside the cheek for a few seconds. There are no needles, so it's suitable for babies and children.
How long does it take?
Your result usually takes about 2 weeks from the day we collect your samples. For reasons outside our control, it may take up to 6 weeks, and we'll keep you informed.
What do I sign?
Before collection, everyone aged 16 or over signs our DNA Testing Consent and Agreement Form. By signing, you confirm that you have read and fully understood our terms and agree to be bound by them. If you need help reading them, we'll read and explain them to you first.
Does the mother need to be tested?
Only for a maternity test, where she is one of the people being tested. For every other DNA test, testing the mother is optional and comes at no extra cost.
What do we bring?
Adults should bring a valid photo ID, such as a Ghana Card or passport. For a child under 16, bring the birth certificate or weighing card if you have one. For legal tests, we'll tell you what's needed when you book.
What if a cheek swab isn't possible?
Tell us your situation. We may be able to test an unusual sample, such as nails or a toothbrush, at GHS 1,500 per participant. Everyone tested must still give consent.
Who gets the report?
We release the report only to the person you nominate at the start, or to the requesting official, such as a court or authority.
Do you test without someone's consent?
No. Everyone aged 16 or over must agree and sign for themselves. A parent or legal guardian signs only for a participant under 16. We don't accept samples collected without consent.
Can the DNA test help with a visa?
Many embassies set their own rules and may arrange their own sampling. Check with the embassy before you pay for a test, and we'll help you understand the next step.
Can a person abroad take part?
Often, yes, but it needs planning. Contact us with the country and we'll tell you what's possible.
Can you test during pregnancy?
We don't offer prenatal paternity testing yet. Contact us if you'd like to hear when it's available.
